About This Journey

This trip to Taiwan was my first trip alone with friends. It was right after we finished our SPM in 2017. To me, this was where my journey started. Not needing to follow a fix itenary by a travelling agency, we roam the streets of Taiwan freely. From getting street food, to visiting parks and experiencing some cultural traditions, Taiwan was a great place to kick start my travel journey. It might be the accompaniment of my friends, or how Taiwan is slightly similar to the culture I'm involved it, travelling Taiwan was a different yet comforting experience.

Top 3 Spots

Shifen Old Street

#01 Shifen Old Street

Shifen Old Street is a bustling hub for those eager to get a glimpse of an old railroad town which still retains the charm of yesteryear. Originally built to transport coal, the Shifen Old Street stop has now become one of the most popular on the Pingxi rail-line. The street has many local food, souvenir shops and sometimes people are able to see the puffing train passing the railroad. Another significant thing about this place is the sky lanterns. Visitors paint their wishes with calligraphy before releasing the lanterns into the sky.

Shihlin Night Market

#02 Shihlin Night Market

Shihlin Night Market is famous for being the largest and most famous night market in Taiwan. Here, visitors can taste various kinds of Taiwanese street food and buy local souvenirs. Some of my food recommendations would be papaya milk, stinky tofu, and oyster omelet. However, a slight downfall of this place is it's slightly expensive compared to some other less popular night markets in Taiwan. But overall, the experience here was great as there was a lot to look at and eat.

The Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village

#03 JiuZhou Culture Village

The JiuZhou Culture Village, also know as The Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, is an amusement park which is distinctive for its Formosan aboriginal culture theme. The park contains the tallest free-fall ride in Taiwan as well as Taiwan's largest European gardens and bell tower. It is a place where people can observe Taiwanese traditional tribal lifestyle and observe an abundance of aboriginal traditions while having fun play amusement rides. The atmosphere gives visitors a glimpse of aboriginal heritage in an authentic setting by depicting the villages and lifestyles of Taiwan’s nine main tribes.
